Summer 2023 Courses

All courses run for seven weeks (week of June 14 through the week of July 26).

There is no registration fee, but the first $50 toward your tuition is due upon registration.

All classes are limited to 12 students.

Medieval Handcraft

  • Time: Thursdays, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm
  • Tuition: $150; includes cost of materials
  • Grades: Rising 6-12 and recent graduates; mature upper elementary may attend with an older sibling
  • Location: Signal Mountain, Tennessee; address will be provided to registrants only
  • Description: This course introduces students to the arts of calligraphy, illumination, stained-glass, and mosaic through a historic overview of medieval art. Students will create adapted replicas of medieval works. Optional out-of-class assignments only.

Novels of Jane Austen

  • Young ladies only
  • Time: Thursdays, 2:00 – 4:30 pm
  • Tuition: $150; includes cost of materials
  • Grades: Rising 6-12 and recent graduates
  • Location: Signal Mountain, Tennessee; address will be provided to registrants only
  • Description: This course includes close reading and discussion of Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility, two novels centered on the role of wisdom, discernment, and truth among friends and sisters. Each week, students will have traditional afternoon tea, learn Regency-era dances and songs, and work on creating their own scrapbooks about Jane Austen and Regency Britain. The only out-of-class assignment is to read (or listen to) the next chapters.

Writing I – abbreviated

  • Time: Wednesdays, 1:00-3:30 pm
  • Tuition: $250
  • Grades: Rising 5-9
  • Location: Signal Mountain, Tennessee; address will be provided to registrants only
  • Description: This abbreviated format of the year-long Writing I course provides students with essential training in vocabulary, grammar, and writing effective sentences and paragraphs with a focus on narration and description. All writing assignments are based on classic literature that demonstrates how later authors incorporate Biblical themes, mythology, and chivalric legend into their works. Most reading and writing will be done in class, but some reading and writing will be assigned for homework.

Writing II – abbreviated

  • Please note: Writing II is pre-requisite for most Scriptorium year-long courses

  • Grades: Rising 7-12

  • Description: This abbreviated format of the year-long Writing II course helps students acquire the essential skills involved in writing persuasive essays based on evidence from their readings. The course also covers logical fallacies. Most reading and writing will be done in class, but some reading and writing will be assigned for homework.
