- This course is offered only during the summer; young ladies seeking to study British literature – including the works of Jane Austen – during the school year can join the Britain Society!
- Location: Signal Mountain, Tennessee
- Grades: High school and middle school strong readers; young ladies only
- Description: Students read, discuss, and write about two of Jane Austen’s major novels.* Students will learn about the literary, historical, and philosophical context of Jane Austen. They will also study Regency-era manners, clothing, dances, and food. Each class meeting includes time for English country dance instruction, singing, and authentic afternoon tea. The only major project for the course is a commonplace book/scrapbook about what students have learned from Jane Austen, her era, and her novels.
- Books needed: Any edition may be used, but hard copies are required.

- Supplies needed:
- Plain notebook or composition book for class notes
- Decorative notebook, journal, or scrapbook of your choice
- Decorative papers, stickers, stamps, ribbons of your choice
- Calligraphy pen
- Glue stick or rubber cement
* The course is offered in a three-year rotation with different novels and different handcrafts covered each year. The second year covers the novels Emma and Persuasion; the third year covers the novels Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park.
