  • Grades: 6-12; young ladies only
  • Description: Students read, discuss, and write about two of Jane Austen’s major novels.* This year, the course includes close reading and discussion of Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility, two novels centered on the role of wisdom, discernment, and truth among friends and sisters. Each week, students will have traditional afternoon tea, learn Regency-era dances and songs, and work on creating their own scrapbooks about Jane Austen and Regency Britain.

    • Best alternative Sense and Sensibility is the Ignatius Critical Editions version (ISBN: 9781586178383)
    • Best alternative Northanger Abbey is the Oxford World’s Classics version (ISBN: 9780199535545)

* The course is offered in a three-year rotation with different novels and different handcrafts covered each year. The second year covers the novels Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park; the third year covers the novels Emma and Persuasion.
