  • Description:
    • In addition to studying Jane Austen’s life and times, students read and discuss two of Jane Austen’s major novels.* This year, the course includes close reading and discussion of Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility, two novels centered on the role of wisdom, discernment, and truth among friends and sisters. The course includes a photo-tour of Jane Austen sites in England, and the last week of class will end with a formal Regency ball; historic costumes welcome!
    • Each week, students will have traditional afternoon tea, learn Regency-era dances and songs, and work on creating their own historical scrapbooks about Jane Austen and Regency Britain. Two instructional sessions are held before tea and two after tea. Authentic Regency-era foods will be served, but students may bring a sack lunch and/or snacks to share.

* The course is offered in a three-year rotation with different novels and different handcrafts covered each year. The second year covers the novels Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park; the third year covers the novels Emma and Persuasion.
