Novels of Jane Austen

  • Description:
    • In addition to studying Jane Austen’s life and times, students read and discuss two of Jane Austen’s major novels.* This year, the course includes close reading and discussion of Emma and Persuasion. The course includes a photo-tour of Jane Austen sites in England, and the last week of class will end with hat-making and a formal Regency ball; bring your historic costumes if you have them! (Interested younger sisters, rising third grade and up, are most welcome to attend the ball free-of-charge!)
    • Each week, students will have traditional afternoon tea, learn Regency-era dances and songs, and work on creating their own historical scrapbooks about Jane Austen and Regency Britain. Two instructional sessions are held before tea and two after tea. Authentic Regency-era foods will be served, but students may bring a sack lunch and/or snacks to share.

    • Any edition of Emma and Persuasion may be used; Recommended edition is the Barnes and Noble leather-bound Jane Austen: Seven Novels (ISBN: ‎ 9781435103191) Buy cheap used!

* The course is offered in a three-year rotation with different novels and different handcrafts covered each year. The first year covers the novels Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility. The second year covers the novels Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park; the third year covers the novels Emma and Persuasion.
