Traditional Dances of Europe

  • Grades: Mature 5th grade and up
  • Prerequisites: None
  • NOTE: This course requires a minimum of 4 students to run
  • Description: This course provides an introduction to traditional folk and historic dances of Europe. Dances will cover time periods from medieval through early 20th century and countries from the Caucasus to Britain. No closed waltz position will be used; two-hand turns will be substituted for all closed waltz position. The only assignment for the course is to memorize and practice all of the dances. Defense Day dancing will include demonstrations by the students in this course. The course is open to ladies and gentlemen:
    • Gentlemen, it is your responsibility to ensure that all ladies have a partner.
    • Ladies, it is your responsibility to dance politely with the gentleman who has been brave and courteous enough to ask you to dance.
  • Required attire:
    • Footwear: Comfortable athletic shoes in good repair OR ballet or jazz shoes (no bare or stocking feet, and no sandals)
    • Tops: Shirts and blouses should not be tight-fitting and must keep your upper body and all undergarments covered (1) during vigorous movement, (2) when you raise both arms as high as you can over your head, (3) when you lean over as far as you can in all directions
    • Pants/skirts: Must be below the knee
    • Ladies: To the extent possible, please wear skirts
    • OPTIONAL: Anyone interested in wearing the national dress of any of the countries we are studying is welcome to!
